Starting ballet for the first time can feel exciting and a little intimidating. One of the most common questions we hear at Studio Odette is: What will my first class be like?
The short answer: welcoming, structured and full of fun.
Our beginner ballet classes are designed to build confidence step by step. You’ll work on posture, balance, coordination and strength while learning to move with the music. Ballet is a full-body workout that activates deep muscles, improves body control and is beneficial for those who spend long hours sitting or working at a computer. Many new dancers leave their first class feeling taller, stronger and more aware of their movement.
What happens in class?
A beginner class follows a gentle structure. You’ll start at the barre to learn foundational movements and alignment, then move into the centre to practice balance, coordination, and simple combinations. No prior experience is needed - curiosity and patience are all you need.
At Studio Odette, we believe progress is individual. Mistakes are part of learning, and every dancer develops at their own pace in a supportive environment.
What should I wear?
Comfort comes first. Wear fitted clothes that allow you to move freely, for example leggings and a tank top are perfect. Clothing shouldn’t be too loose, as the teacher needs to see your legs and arms clearly to help guide you.
For your first class, you don’t need special ballet shoes. Regular socks work well - just avoid being barefoot. If you decide to continue, traditional ballet attire may include a leotard, tights, soft ballet shoes and optional layers like skirts or leg warmers.
For children’s classes, specific clothing guidelines are shared after registration, and families are always welcome to email us with questions.
